Congresswoman Donna F. Edwards, the first African American women elected to Congress from the state of Maryland, was re-elected to her first full-term, with 85% of the vote, by defeating Republican Peter James and Libertarian Thibeaux Lincecum. Despite long lines and rain for much of the day, voters were undeterred to begin a new era in Washington.
“What an incredible day. For the first time in a long time, voters throughout my district and the country are energized about the hope and possibilities of the future. With President-Elect Barack Obama and greater Democratic majorities in Congress, I am excited about the opportunities that await to forge a new path for our nation’s future by addressing our economic crisis, safely and responsibly ending the war in Iraq, providing quality, affordable health care to all, and investing in our nation’s infrastructure, which will also create jobs. I thank the voters of Maryland’s 4th Congressional District for their support and I am eager to continue serving them in the United States Congress.”
