Today, Gen. David Petraeus is scheduled to testify before Congress on the current situation on the ground in Iraq. Donna Edwards, Democratic nominee for Maryland’s 4th Congressional District is prepared to ask the tough questions regarding the continuing U.S. presence in Iraq.
“I agree with Gen. Petraeus: “there is no military solution to a problem like that in Iraq,” stated Donna Edwards. “Even with statements like these from our top military leaders, the only alternatives that are on the table are military approaches and strategies. This is no longer acceptable as a framework for the future. It's time to end this costly and disastrous war. My first question for the General is: When are you prepared to discuss and implement a multi-tiered approach to Iraq that includes economic, diplomatic, and political options to bring stability and sustainable progress to Iraq? Has the war in Iraq made the United States safer? Is the current U.S. force level in Iraq covering up the lack of political progress in the country and isn't that troop level unsustainable? Doesn't the violence of the last several weeks demonstrate that the central government is weak and that the Iraqi forces are not trained or prepared to defend against the insurgents?
I believe "A Responsible Plan to End the War in Iraq” is a critical step in the right direction and is the kind of discussion we need to start having in Washington and across the country.”
